Blyth & District

Welcome to Blyth & District U3A

The U3A (University of the Third Age), is an organisation that brings together retired and semi-retired men and women who want to learn from one another and share experiences, knowledge, philosophies, values and ideas in a friendly and informal setting. Click on the U3A Button upper right to get more info.

The inaugural meeting took place on the 24th September 2021 at Blyth Town Football club, with many of the 70 attendees becoming members and showing great interest in the variety of volunteer led groups which are now on offer. (click on Groups).

We now have a compliment of over 160 members (August 2024)

Steeped in a great history of ship building, mining and inshore and offshore marine technologies, Blyth, which today is a thriving coastal town in South East Northumberland, has records that date back to the 12th century. There are good transport links into the town centre from surrounding areas such as Cramlington, Annitsford, Dudley, Bedlington and Seaton Delaval from where a great deal of interest in our U3A has been shown. A new Northumberland Line train link to Newcastle Central Station and the Metro System will commence December 2024/January 2025. Keep an eye on Councillor Daniel Carr's Facebook page for more info.

For an opportunity to find out more and meet with our members come along to one of the friendly monthly meetings which are held on the 4th Friday of the month from 1pm to 3pm in the Blyth Town Football club main room, South Newsham Pavilion, South Newsham, Blyth, NE24 3PS (click on Events) Please bring your own cups to save our washing up and as we have a large membership. Our committee will supply tea, coffee & biccies but we don't have a lot of mugs or cups.

Blyth U3A Monthly Meeting At the Blyth Town Football Club. South Newsham Pavilion, South Newsham, Blyth, NE24 3PS The meeting is for all members and prospective members too. Don't forget you can come to ONE meeting and visit ONE Group activity. If you want to attend a group you must contact the group leader first before turning up. After that if you decide you like us, and want to join in the group activities you must become a member of Blyth U3A by paying the annual subscription (or pro rata before the end of the year) plus an entrance fee (usually about £2), you can then become members of as many groups as you wish. (Can members please remember to bring their own cups for the teas and coffees as we are finding it very difficult to cart all of the mugs backwards and forward to the meetings. We can now supply disposable cups at 20p each but because we are a "green" organisation I'm sure you will welcome not using these if possible.😊😊).

There is an application form on the Links page, this can be downloaded using a pdf reader (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, others are available) and filled in at your leisure. You can give this to any committee member or at the door at our monthly meetings (with your subscription, pro rata for the part year). Alternatively the membership secretary will have spare forms at the monthly meeting and he will assist you.

If you have further queries, then please click on each groups email where you can email the relevant person directly.😊

Keep an eye out in Home Page Notices and Group Pages for our upcoming events

We also occasionally add links to good causes and the SchoolReaders is dedicated to helping Primary School Kids read and understand better outside of the school curriculum that may not cater enough time for some. Click on the button below for more info and the website. Schoolreaders Volunteers visit a local primary school for an hour or two each week and read 1:1 with children from across the school. Our volunteers must be able to commit to an hour each week for a full year and must undergo an Enhanced DBS check, although this would be completed by the school volunteers are matched with and so would have no cost implication. Volunteers must have a good standard of written and spoken English but we do not require any other skills and we do not have any age restrictions on our volunteers as long as they are over 18. Our youngest volunteer is 18 and the oldest is currently 92!
